This is one of my favourite research methods and Microsoft Clarity is my weapon of choice here.

It’s a free tool that shows you exactly how real users interact with your product page. Other tools include Crazy Egg and Hot Jar.

You only need to embed a script on your website and then you get access to a whole host of features.

It feels a little invasive at first! You can see a recording of where a real user clicked, how far they scrolled, and even where they got frustrated.

For this to be effective, you do need a certain level of traffic coming to your site already.

Within a few days, you’ll start seeing valuable data roll in. The real magic happens after about 30 days when you have enough data to spot patterns. Especially on the heatmaps and most clicked areas of a page.

In the example below, we noticed users weren’t scrolling through our long page. So we added these anchor links to the bottom to help them jump to key pieces of content. They now get clicked by 27% of users, and conversion rates have increased because of it.

When reviewing your pages, pay special attention to:

  • How much time users spend on certain sections of the page
  • Whether they return to the page multiple times
  • Do they click on something expecting it to open
  • If they download technical documentation
  • Which feature sections get the most attention
  • How they interact with product images or videos

Top Tip: Watch at least 10-15 session recordings of and you’ll often spot usability issues that analytics or data alone won’t reveal.

That rounds out our customer research section. Next, we turn internally to our subject matter experts for insights.
